Common Problems and Solutions in Using Drupal

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Drupal is a content Management System that is free and open source. It is used by hundreds of thousands of users and is being supported by a number of communities. Though it is tested to be workable and not to disappoint users, there are some things that you need to know about using Drupal in order to utilize its full potential.

Memory problem in remembering administration passwords. Of course, this is not Drupal’s fault, it is more of a user dysfunction. However, this problem should be addressed since it is very common and, as simple as its solution may seem, a lot of people still experience this. The simplest thing that you could do is just go directly to the password recovery system. However, if this does not work, there are other things that you could try. From the drop-down menu on the left and then click on the database that Drupal utilizes. Select the tab for the SQL and a text field will come out. In the text field type “update users set pass-md5(’YOURPAS’) where uid = 1. What this code means is that YOURPAS is the new admin password that you would want to use. After typing the text, just click go and, if there are no other problems, you already have your new password. This kind of option is very helpful if you forgot the email used for making the admin account and/or the email you used is already non-existent.

Article Marketing Success – 4 Tips To A More Appealing Article

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The more appealing an article is, the more successful it will be. The most appealing articles, submitted to the appropriate directories, may garnish your website with numerous links, increase your traffic levels, and build trust in your brand. If you also intend to include your article on your own website then you can improve conversions, further increase traffic, and promote your pages through social networking.

1 – Know Your Target Market

Every article is likely to appeal to a slightly different demographic of potential customer. Each has their own unique needs and their own requirements. It’s important that you learn to understand these needs and requirements and then meet them using the context of your article. Everything including the title of your piece, the directories you submit to, and the author resource box needs to appeal to your target market.

2 – About The Author

Writing for article submissions is very different to writing for your own website. You don’t have the opportunity to directly promote your service until the very last paragraph. The About The Author paragraph is where the magic really needs to happen. In a limited amount of space you need to be able to accurately convey the service or product you offer, why potential customers need to visit your site, and it needs to include one or two search engine friendly links.

3 – Anticipate And Answer Questions

The most appealing article content answers questions that your readers are asking. By using point 1 you should be able to determine or anticipate what these questions will be. Ask the questions in the article, and then answer those same questions. You don’t necessarily need to give everything away but by providing this information you are helping to pre-sell the concept of your products or services, making the sale on your website a little easier.

4 – Be Authoritative

Offering an authoritative voice helps readers to believe what you say and builds trust in your brand. This trust will, again, help with pre-selling your products or services. Because you are unable to directly promote yourself until the final paragraph of your article, you will need to be authoritative in voice and narrative style, as well as in the information you provide. It’s also vital that you make that last paragraph, the About The Author paragraph, count.

A Reason to Smile For All PHP Developers

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The market is full of developers in different languages like ASP.net, C#, VB.net, Coldfusion, Java and last but not least PHP. Among all the great time has come for PHP developers in India and abroad. The reason is simple. They are highly in demand due to domestic and international requirement. Let me explain how.

Due to the recent recession, most of companies and government organizations have started cutting corners, IT expenditure is among the worst sufferer out of any other expenditures. Because IT expenditure is not considered as Core source of Direct Income, so it’s going to feel the heat. Now need of having up to date online information without losing the customer faith is also important. Its true for government and private organization. But that cost goes higher and higher in licensing and development. The response to that was simple, open source technology adoption. And what is the easiest and best to start is PHP development.

PHP development is not only providing the cost effective solution but its known for its robust features on internet. Above all the great community support has made it un disputed leader in web development solutions. It’s definitely giving a second thought to existing proprietary programming language owners.

Simple Sites Big Profits, Marcus Campbell, and the Internet Marketing Dilemma

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Marcus Campbell is a long time internet marketer who really knows his stuff. His latest product, “Simple Sites Big Profits” is quickly becoming a best seller in spite of its high price.

If you read the sales page, it will lead you to believe that just by purchasing the product you will be able to retire tomorrow a millionaire. But that is really common for the type of product it is.

The sad truth is that without the over hyped sales page and promises of instant mega wealth without work are the only things that sell. Most people are not concerned with facts and will turn away from a great offer if it is not presented that way.

The problem is, even Marcus can’t deliver you a product that will make you a fortune without a lot of work. So what he has done is create a product that consist of completed and usable templates, eliminating the need for most of the harder work. Namely obtaining and modifying a professional looking page.

Building the pages takes a lot of work. Simple Sites Big Profits, standing alone, represents hundreds of saved hours of putting together the pages. Or it may save you thousands of dollars of site design work, which is always untested and unproven until you test and prove it.

There is a lot more to Marcus’s product than the templates, including some very useful and little known ways of promoting the pages once you have them up. But when I look at a product, I look at how it can save me time in doing what I already do and how quickly it pays for itself.

Even though this is the most expensive of the money making products I have bought and tested, it is also the biggest time saver.

When I test a product, the goal is always to see if I can make enough off of it to pay for it within 30 days. In the case of Simple Sites Big Profits, it took nearly three weeks to recoup the expense.

Most products pay off quicker, but they don’t have nearly the initial outlay of cash. But the cost is overridden because you have an endless supply of tested and proven templates that you can use to expand you business infinitely.

Eventually, you may even make as much as the sales page claims.

ECommerce – A Plan

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Planning an ecommerce website is like building a house – architecture and budget need to be agreed before the decoration.

An agreed requirements specification must be drawn up as the first stage before anything else is done – any other approach will only lead to confusion and worse.

Once an Agreed requirements specification has been agreed then solutions need to be evaluated and costed against that specification are:

- Project management
- Hardware
- Web design and software
- Site marketing
- Project management:

All aspects of the project need to be managed. Decide who is going to do it and properly plan the requirements, activities, outcomes, milestones and timings.

Hardware:

Your choices here are a managed service or your own server. The security and disaster recovery aspect that is achieved by hosting with a major provider is very important. Only go with your own server if you have the experience and facilities.

Design and Software:

Site design
Develop site templates and test them with real people. They have to be easy to use and navigate. Don’t let “design” drive the site; let ease of use and sales drive the “design”. Think how the customer thinks.

Software
At least 5 solutions need to be considered.

There are 2 realistic routes here. Either an online or an offline, PC based content management system (CMS). The online CMS can be either an Open Source CMS (Open Source means any application that has been made available, generally free, to developers to view and modify freely. Examples of Open Source applications are MySQL and PHP) or commercial.

There are pros and cons to both routes. An online system is available to anyone with relevant security clearance anywhere any time. A PC based system is, obviously, limited to the PCs running the licenses. An example of a PC based system is Macromedia Contribute which integrates with Dreamweaver. There are a whole range of online Commercial and Open Source options such as SuiteWisea

What a Stale Argument!

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Does politics has a place in genetically modified (GM) food debate? “No”, is the obvious answer. Politics and science are such sworn adversaries that they cannot eat from the same plate. Politics mainly thrive on propaganda, vilification, name-calling and personal gratification at the expense of the general good. Science is anchored on verifiable facts, it is objective, gentle, and seeks to make the world a better place for all of us to live. You cannot politicize science unless you fancy mediocrity.

One Jeffrey Smith, the author of “Seeds of Deception,” this week advised South Africans to avoid genetically modified food like plague. Why? South Africans stand to lose European beef and poultry markets if they feed their livestock on genetically modified food. To be on the safe side, South Africans should use conventional feeds. Pooh!

“There is a massive rejection of genetically modified ingredients in human food in Europe, and growing demand that animals are fed on conventional crops,” Smith told his audience. What a misleading advice!

Deliberately misleading the public on any issue is both morally reprehensible and abominable. Those who exploit the vulnerability of the poor for self gains risk isolation by the world. Why misinform to confuse? United States of America is a traditional grower of genetically modified food. The U.S.’s European beef markets have not shrunk as a result of cultivating GMOs.Latest statistics at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show beef and veal exports ballooned from 461 million pounds in 2004 to 615 billion pounds in 2005. The bulk of the exports went to European markets. Smith lives in the U.S. and ought to have made this clear to his audience. If he did so, I would not be here penning this article.

Europe, itself, is fast embracing genetically modified food. Last month, the European Union endorsed importation of genetically modified animal feed. Does Smith want to tell South Africa that Europe is shooting itself in the foot?

Already, farmers in five European Union countries, including France and Germany are growing genetically modified food. They have not lost their beef and poultry markets. In Spain, GMO Maize’s harvest this year will top 50,000 hectares, all of which will be used as cattle feed. Spain’s beef markets in Europe remain intact. They are not in limbo. These are hard facts and no amount of propaganda and grandstanding will change them. Let’s be pragmatic when debating the issue of genetically modified food. This is the only way to help consumers to make informed decisons.

Debate on pros and cons of genetically modified food is a luxury to Africa. Somebody should not make Africa believe that it would lose oversees markets for growing genetically modified food. Africa cannot feed itself as of now. Women and kids are dying in Niger, Ethiopia, and Eritrea of hunger. Priority, now, should not be to grow food for exports but to feed the hungry and the malnourished. To scare Africa that it will lose oversees markets is putting the cart before the horse.

Understanding OsCommerce

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The Internet has become a popular place to do business. Now that there are several options available to everyone, everywhere, the need for viable options is imminent. Likewise, companies offering their services online, whether exclusively, or in conjunction with their traditional means of operation, need ways to quickly and efficiently do business, while making sure their customer information is safe and secure. This is why it has become necessary to find an OsCommerce solution.

OsCommerce is an online solution for E-Commerce that is currently under ongoing development by the open source community. This means that it is continually worked on by those in the industry who understand its need and are able to experiment to find out the best solutions. Through the open source community, information is shared in order to provide optimal assistance toward solving both common and uncommon problems that may arise. It also allows store owners to set up, run, and maintain their online solutions with little to no effort, which enables them to concentrate more on the business aspect than the technical issues.

The best part of OsCommerce is that it is free. There are no licensing fees or costs involved, which is often one of the most attractive characteristics of open source solutions. OsCommerce combines open source solutions together to provide a free and open E-Commerce platform, which includes the PHP web scripting language, a stable Apache web server, and the MySQL database server. This scripting language is powerful and the server fast, which allows for more seamless transactions to take place.

There are no restrictions or special requirements with OsCommerce, and it is, therefore, able to run on any PHP enabled web server, along with a variety of supported environments. This broadens the spectrum for OsCommerce to work on several operating system environments and in multiple situations.

OsCommerce began in 2000, and has now matured into a solution that is currently powering a wide variety of online shops around the globe. The services it offers are helping business owners in many ways, and are making it easier for them to concentrate on keeping their business up and running, while serving a constantly growing number of customers on a daily basis. It has also made it easier for potential customers to find businesses, and to purchase products and services more quickly and efficiently. It is serving both the business owner and the customer in ways that will only help E-commerce get better.

Performance Evaluation Made Simple

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Nobody much likes performance evaluation systems. Managers find them unworkable and uncomfortable. Workers dread them. And many experts think we should scrap them altogether.

But if you’re a working manager you don’t get much choice. You’ve got to do performance evaluations on your people using the system your organization has in place.

You can make lemons from this lemonade, though. Here’s how.

Start by understanding that there are really two different things that go by the name, “performance evaluation.” One of those things is your organization’s formal performance appraisal process.

Do whatever you must to handle your organization’s evaluation system. You have to work with whatever system your organization has devised. Someday you may be able to change it, but not now. Devote your time and energy to making the system deliver good results.

But the formal system is only part of the story. Usually the evaluation that happens there is like a report card. It’s a summary judgment of performance that took place over a period of time.

The real evaluation happens in hundreds of encounters during everyday work. It’s what bosses should do several times a day as a key part of their job. Do evaluation every day. Then, use he formal evaluation meeting as an occasion to review and plan with your subordinates.

There should be no surprises. When you sit down at that formal meeting your subordinate shouldn’t be surprised by anything you have to say. You shouldn’t be surprised by your subordinate’s reactions. That will happen if you’ve already done the hard work in little steps every day.

Figure out what’s most important. What are the critical things that your subordinate should be able to do? What level of performance should he or she strive for? What behavior is important to keep the team functioning at top level? Once you know the answers to those questions, you know what to monitor and measure and adjust.

Use every contact as occasion to improve performance. That means every contact, every day. Show up a lot so you learn about your people and they get to learn about you. And every time you show up take the opportunity to coach, encourage, counsel and correct.

Give notice if you have to start documenting behavior. Most of the time, your suggestion to change behavior or performance will be informal. That means you won’t need to document. And most of the time your suggestion and coaching will result in improved behavior.

But sometimes you need to let folks know that they’re not doing well enough. If they keep doing what they’re doing, you’ll have to start documenting their behavior. Let them know before your start.

Then, if you must document, do a few things. Keep good records of the performance or behavior that you’re tracking. Be specific about what happened, when and where.

Keep good records of your counseling meetings with your subordinate. What did you say? What did he or she say? How did you agree that things would change?

Making small course corrections along the way has a couple of advantages. First, small corrections are far easier to make than big ones, so your odds of a successful outcome go up.

Second, by making small corrections and documenting your counsel and your subordinate’s behavior, you’ve got the issue on the table. When the time arrives for formal performance evaluation, your subordinate will know where he or she has come up short. And you’ll know what they’ve got to say about how they’re doing. No surprises.

Take enough time in the formal session. In one organization where I did research we compared the time that top supervisors devoted to the annual performance appraisal meeting to the time that other supervisors took. The top supervisors spent almost twice as long in the formal session as their less-effective peers.

But, if there weren’t any surprises, what did they spend time on? They talked about growth and the future. That’s more enjoyable and more productive than going over what did and didn’t happen since the last review.

Make agreements on what will happen next. Be sure you leave the formal performance evaluation session with a clear plan for how your subordinate will develop during the next period and what you’re going to do to help.

Set milestones for your agreements. Determine who will do what and what the deadlines are. Determine how performance should change.

Here’s what to remember. The performance evaluation that makes a difference takes place every day, every time you encounter someone who works for you. If you take every opportunity to coach, counsel, encourage and correct your people, and if you document where you must, there will be no surprises at evaluation time. Then you can use the evaluation time to help people grow and develop.
