Based on the classic children’s novel, Toby Tyler is ideal material for a Disney movie. You may remember Kevin Corcoran from several other Disney classics, including Swiss Family Robinson, Old Yeller, etc. and so forth. Here he plays a young boy who runs away from home and joins the circus. The circus adventure and comedy is a bit predictable, but well played and well served by the high Disney production values with great color, stunts, etc.

My favorite part of the movie involves Toby Tyler learning to ride and do stunts standing on a horse, and they have him tied to a pole that swings around a post to follow the galloping horse. I can’t describe the scene in words, you just have to see this bit of comic genius. It’s worth the price of the DVD for this one segment alone.

But if that’s not enough for you, you get a plethora of circus performances and exotic animals in color. Highly recommended for the whole family to watch together.

Toby Tyler, is a wonderful movie! I really don’t know what the fuss is about it being in wide or full screens. the VHS was a fullscreen tape, and it was great. so there is no need to be worried about the widescreen effect. Either way its a great family movie, with lots to say and teach us, about values, love, and friendships. I Suggest this movie to everyone!

My son was begging us for this movie ever since he saw the preview that came with the Dragon Egg toys. (Smart marketing.) Anyway, he has this one and the first one (Fire and Ice) and LOVES both of them. He is almost 6. I was concerned that they might be too violent, since I don’t even let him watch Sat. morning cartoons, but compared to a lot of what is out there, these weren’t too bad. I like that they have both a hero and heroine who are equally strong. I’d reccomend both movies and plan to buy the 3rd one.

My 8 yr old loved the first Dragon movie so much I was glad to find the second one. The movie has creative characters and teaches kids lessons on dealing with anger and not judging others by their past.

I first saw this film with a friend and we were both laughing so hard we constantly had to stop the film just to recover. Richard Pryor is absolutely one of the funniest and most honest human beings who ever lived. As far as I’m concerned the only comedian who has even come close is Bernie Mac. But Bernie is tame compared to the full throttle antics of Pryor.

Pryor approaches the show knowing the audience has read a lot about his troubled personal life so he comes out and point blank explains everything. From how he ran down the block after setting himself on fire accidentally, to his troubled marriage, to his trip to Africa and how it changed him.

There’s a lot of F-bombs (surprise) so you probably don’t want to watch this movie in mixed company. If you’re sensitive to “white people are so funny” routines then you should probably get a life. But if you wanna hear about how even the African hares intimidated Pryor (”I ain’t never seen a rabbit look at me like that before”) or how the lions wanted to eat him and his camera, then this is a movie that will have you laughing so hysterically you’ll probably pee in your pants.

Richard Pryor has influenced scores and scores of comedians and theres a good reason why….because hes one of the greats!!! This show which was filmed in Vegas is truly his finest hour. Taped after his infamous freebasing incident, he touches on his cocaine addiction….and as brutal as it was he makes it funny. Also, he talks about gangsters he used to work with and them telling murder stories!! No comedian would dare touch on things like this, and to make these things funny takes TALENT. Of which Pryor has an abundance of.

So if you want a revealing, awe inspiring, provacative and funny comedy show, this is it. Pryors finest hour, the show of himself.

As a teacher of Classical Greek and Roman Mythology I was looking forward to “Troy.” In the past I have put together a unit on the Trojan War that included not only Homer’s epic poem the “Iliad,” but also the plays of Euripides and Aeschylus and other ancient works on the stories of these characters. In other words I am familiar with this story to the extent that when Briseis showed up wearing a garment with long sleeves I was upset that we did not get to see the lovely arms that were part of her usual epithet. So, suffice it to say, that when characters who survived the Trojan War started dying in this film, I was not exactly happy. Consequently, the truth is that the less you know about the Trojan War of classical mythology, the more you will enjoy Wolfgang Petersen’s “Troy.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy! Click Here

I have no problem with the idea that Homer and the other ancients have to be adapted in making a modern motion picture about the Trojan War. The decision to eliminate the gods is appropriate, getting away from the idea that this was a ten year war makes sense, and if the alliance of the Greeks is now political rather than as part of an oath sworn by the princes who were suitors for Helen’s hand, I consider that to be legitimate. I do not understand why Iphigenia, Cassandra, and Hecuba are all eliminated but there are not fatal omissions. But when you start rewriting who gets killed that is going a bit too far, especially when one premature death starts a chain effect that means Athens will never develop the jury system, which means we probably lose out on it too. David Benioff’s screenplay was “inspired” by Homer’s “Iliad,” which at least is an honest way to characterize what he did in this script, but I still do not have to like it or endorse it.

The big selling point for this film was not Homer but rather Brad Pitt as Achilles. Stories abound about how Pitt worked six months to get in shape for this film, gave up smoking, and ended up hurting his Achilles tendon in one of those profound ironies that indicates that maybe the gods were not pleased with what was happening in this film. Pitt certainly looks good, not just in terms of taking several opportunities to display the line of his nude body, but in how he carries himself as Achilles. The whole idea is that this guy is the greatest warrior on the face of the planet and Pitt exudes that with the way he strides across the sands of Troy. Even more impressive is the choreography for the fights, because Pitt’s movements are so smooth and powerful, especially compared with that of Eric Bana’s Hector, that you do not doubt that this guy is in a league by himself as a warrior. I also like the way he uses the distinctive form of his shield when fighting. They thought this part out quite a bit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Troy! Click Here

The fight choreography was worked out by Simon Crane, the film’s stunt coordinator and second unit director, who describes Achilles as fighting with a boxing style but with the velocity of a speed skater and the agility of a panther. They also come up with a nice touch in that Achilles looks slightly to the side at his opponent until he is ready to come in for the kill. The best fight sequences of “Troy” are when Achilles is fighting. The giant battle sequences of computerized soldiers are not as impressive, mainly because the camera is always in motion and the cutting is so fast that we are left with an impression of the battle rather than always being able to tell what is going on (which has become my constant complaint with most movies with large battle sequences).

Bana does a good job of capturing Hector’s nobility without turning him into a marble statue, while Peter O’Toole fills the role of Priam naturally. On the Trojan side the problematic character is Paris (Orlando Bloom), again because of the writing more than the performance. Priam has negotiated peace between Troy and the Sparta of King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), but that is destroyed when Paris persuades Helen (Diane Kruger) to run away with him. Both Hector and Priam know that Paris is wrong and their reasons for supporting him and thereby dooming Troy ring hollow (the less than stellar “Helen of Troy” television miniseries did a nice job of providing a solid motivation for the Trojans to protect Helen).

It you want to draw a clear distinction between Homer’s story of Achilles and that of Benioff it is that the former is about the rage of Achilles (see the first line of the “Iliad”) and the latter adds an equally strong love element. The one character whose role is most inflated in this version is that of Briseis (Rose Byrne), the Trojan slave girl who comes between Achilles and Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the king of kings for the Greeks. This change becomes the reasoning behind how the film rewrites the end game of the Trojan War, although I still do not understand why some of the key characters get to live happily ever after. But since Pitt’s performance dominates the film and he is clearly the horse that director Wolfgang Petersen is riding to make the whole thing work, it makes sense that he has to be around until the very end.

The good news is that when I teach mythology after this DVD comes out my students will probably enjoy attacking Benioff’s changes in the original stories of Greek mythology in their papers. I think this will definitely help them understand why the writings of Homer and the other ancients are considered classics.

Features 2 new extras: “Troy In Focus” a 23 minute interview and a new 5 minute introduction by Wolfgang Peterson. Most of the other special features have been ported over from the previous edition.

First the most important question is whether or not this double dip is worth it? Absolutely because the additional footage only enhances the film giving it additional depth. The transfer is striking (regardless of which format)as well. In many respects this isn’t a double dip because we get a film that is superior to the original version.

Unlike “The Illiad” Wolfgang Petersen’s film “Troy” seemed too short and for good reason; Petersen had to trim the film down to a shorter length for its theatrical release. Luckily Warner gave Petersen the opportunity to revisit this epic film and add more meat to the bones of a film that had the look of an epic but was missing much of the emotional depth.

Petersen restores roughly 32 minutes to the film giving additional depth to the various relationships in the film. While “Troy” isn’t a perfect epic, it’s much improved. James Horner’s score is still occasionally obtrusive but the overall impact of Petersen’s film with its marvelous performances from Brian Cox (who steals almost every scene he’s in), the quiet power of Eric Bana and even the gravity of Pitt as Achilles is far more effective than the previous version.

Image quality is superb for both the DVD and Blu Ray verisons of the film (the Blu Ray, of course, gets the nod because the images are much sharper, crisper with better definition but the DVD isn’t too shabby either). Audio for the Blu Ray is presented lossless while the DVD’s audio sounds terrific given the limitations of the format. Colors are a bit bolder here than on the previous version to my eyes.

It appears that a lot of the special features from the previous edition have been ported over and the only new things are the introduction by Petersen as well as a retrospective 23 minute interview where Petersen discusses the genesis of the original film and this project.

This film version much more closely resembles what he had in mind when he took on the project. Greek mythology purists will find some of the changes disturbing but some of the changes enhance the film pulling the strands of the story together a little tighter.

I could say that I bought ‘Spice World’ for my teenage daughter and that would be quite true. Of course that statement wouldn’t account for the additional copy stashed away in my own personal DVD collection. I guess it’s time for me to face up to the truth and just say it out loud. Mel B – Mel C – Victoria – Geri & Emma, your movie is hilarious!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Spice World! Click Here

Yes, it’s predictable, shallow and inane, but it’s also adorable, quirky and off-the-wall in a good, Monty Python sort of way. It actually works! Say and think what you will, I LIKE IT!

So no more excuses accepted, get your own copy of ‘Spice World’ so you can enjoy the Fab Five as they romp about jolly old England in their very ‘posh’ double decker bus! GIRL POWER!!

Everybody has something that they enjoy and just can’t explain. They might even be a little embarassed to admit that they like it. Well, I’m not embarassed to admit that the Spice Girls are one of my guilty pleasures. Granted, their music may be a little hokey, but they sure are fun to listen to. In “Spice World,” the girls take on a world tour with Bond-esque style. This movie isn’t fantastic, but it is fun enough for the whole family to watch. It’s silly, it’s goofy, and, at times, it is brilliant. You get a feel of what these ladies had to put up with on a daily basis, albeit in a grand and over-the-top style. There are cameos abound in this flick as well. The acting isn’t that bad and the girls seemed to enjoy making the movie.

Funny moments abound in this flick, but some of my personal favorites are when the girls first get on their tour bus and they complain about how hot it is. They say that they could use a fan and, in perfect British comedic style, a young, pre-teen girl comes through the door screaming with glee and then runs back out the door. The girls sigh with comfortable relief. Another funny moment is the expensive, special-effects laden tour-bus jumping a draw-bridge with Posh behind the wheel scene. Finally, in the end credits, the girls “interact” with the audience. They remark on people making out, wonder why folks watching their video can’t find anything good on the “telly” and audience member clothes. The entire movie is just a fun little trip.

Alan Cumming(X-Men 2, Josey and the Pussycats) takes a turn as a reporter attempting to document the lives of these ladies. George Wendt(Norm, of ‘Cheers’ fame)is a movie producer looking for a film to put the girls in and cash in on their fame. Meatloaf is the bus driver for the girls. Some of the better-known cameos that American audiences will recognize are Elton John, Bob Hoskins and Roger Moore. If you’re a die-hard fan of British film and television, you’ll recognize many of the other cameos as well.

The only reason I’m giving this movie three stars is because, obviously, this movie isn’t for everyone. In fact, many people might think that this movie is just too silly to watch. On my personal scale, I would give this flick four stars for the simple fact that I love to watch it and because the Spice Girls don’t take themselves too seriously in the movie.

Overall, this is a silly, blatantly cheesy movie that lets you laugh at and with the Spice Girls. They poke fun at themselves and have a good time doing it. A good movie to watch when you have a little time to kill or just want to forget about the world(but not the ‘Spice World’) for awhile.

Great series, and the episodes in this disc demonstrate a maturity of concept; Sato knows who and what he is, and plays it quite well. His relationship with Misaki…progresses (?) as it generally does in Animé series. His relationship with Yamazaki has improved quite a bit, and they do actually seem to be making progress on their game. It seems funny, because Sato & friends go from place to place actually helping lonely, frustrated and lost people, which is an odd choice for a hikikomori. Overall, a solid set of episodes that advances the storyline as well as entertains.

I read the original novel between seeing the 4th and 5th discs of this series, so I think that changed my viewpoint a little. The differences between the animé and the novel really stand out a lot…Misaki looks much more like a positive thing than ever before, and Sato isn’t nearly so hopeless as he was before. Part of this is what was necessary to create an animé series from a novel/manga (dropping drug and lolita references for the most part), but there’s also a substantial change of tone. I’m really looking forward to the 6th disc.

Olympia is a movie that resides in the Public Domain. Every version I have ever found is of the same quality and this version is no different. The DVD offers no frills but when you buy this movie, it is not for the frills, it is for the movie.

It was the 1936 Berlin Games that introduced the opening ceremony, the torch relay, the three-tiered presentation ceremony, and the overall sense of lavish, religious spectacle. In a way these are the first modern games. Does it worry you that most of the stuff we most fondly associate with the Olympics originated with the Nazis? It doesn’t worry me: the Nazis’ moral sense may have been deplorable, but their aesthetic sense was not nearly so bad as people like to pretend.

The greatest thing about this movie is that even though the subject matter is repugnant, the film is done in great taste and Leni Riefenstahl is a genious.

Even with all the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson last year (and doesn’t it seem as if each new week brings another celebrity meltdown?), I still looked forward to seeing “Apocalypto.” Why? If for no other reason–the subject matter, subtitles, and lack of star power made it a bold choice for a major studio release. Films of this nature generally go into limited distribution to develop an audience and critical word of mouth before expanding, if they ever do. But with Gibson at the helm, “Apocalypto” debuted with much fanfare and backing just in time to be considered for 2006’s Academy Awards. For some reason, though, I still missed “Apocalypto” at the theaters. I have heard every description imaginable from those that have seen the film–from the “best movie ever” to “excessively violent and disturbing.” And while I wouldn’t go to either of those extremes, “Apocalypto” is certainly an accomplished adventure picture.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto! Click Here

Set in ancient Mayan times, “Apocalypto” is essentially the harrowing journey of one man, a youth named Jaguar Paw (a convincing Rudy Youngblood). Living a simple and isolated existence, his tribe are very at home within the forest. One day, the unthinkable happens. They are attacked by another group with apparent intentions of enslaving whomever they don’t kill. Youngblood’s wife and son are stranded in an underground well, many others are murdered, and Youngblood is among a dozen or so who are rounded up and marched out in bondage. The subsequent journey leads to a fantastical temple sequence, where it becomes clear that the prisoners are not to become slaves–but sacrifices. The remainder of the film deals with how Youngblood can escape this situation. The temple scenes feature a cast of thousands, ritualistic and brutal slayings, and a mob mania that is terrifying and believable. Racing against the clock to save his wife, Youngblood must escape back through the jungle–where all he has to help him are his cunning and an almost spiritual connection to his surroundings. The action is practically nonstop, it’s inventive, and it is beautifully staged. Much of “Apocalypto,” therefore, is absolutely riveting and wildly entertaining.

For the purists who will debate the film’s historical accuracy, I will neither deny or confirm the legitimacy of the events that transpire within “Apocalypto.” While there do seem to be some liberties taken with the historical timeline (as evidenced by a surprise in the ending–which I enjoyed despite its implausibility), I really don’t think that this film aspires to be a “historical document.” Gibson has made an adventure story using a Mayan backdrop. The feel and look of his picture stay as valid as possible to the timeframe, however, I never interpreted this picture as a “true” story. Guess what? Fictional liberties are taken in every motion picture. Otherwise every motion picture would be a documentary–and even documentaries have an angle or slant which make them less than “true” in many cases. “Apocalypto,” at heart, is an effective action picture that makes interesting use of its Mayan setting.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto! Click Here

I guess “Apocalypto” is not for the squeamish–however, the violence depicted is by no means unusual by modern film standards. You can see much worse in today’s “torture” cinema, those films that pass for horror with current audiences. I suppose what makes “Apocalypto” more vivid is that the violence is in a believable context. There are some beheadings and some hunting scenes, but the brutality is intrinsic to the story “Apocalypto” is telling. I don’t believe serious minded filmgoers will be put off by seeing some savagery depicted in a film about ancient Mayan cultures–it’s not as if this is a Merchant/Ivory production with tea parties and witty banter.

I do recommend “Apocalypto.” Beautifully filmed, the technical merits of the film are beyond reproach. The cinematography, score, and editing all enhance this exciting tale. I imagine these elements really shone bright for those who saw this on the big screen. A great action picture that is for adults–check it out. KGHarris, 03/07.

A welcome change of pace for us who feel Hollywood keeps making the same picture over and over again. The first part of this film is the most unconventional but also hard to endure as only bad things seem to happen to the characters but once Act II arrives and the chase begins, grab on !. I can’t remmember the last time a film had my stomach in knotts like this one.

Some people here in Mexico have complained about the film’s historical accuracy since by the time the Spanish arrived in America, the Mayan civilization had already been taken over by other groups. In any case, Hollywood films are not the best way to learn about history.

When Braveheart came out over 10 years ago I remmember a friend telling me: “who would have thought Mel Gibson was a real director”, 2 films later he keeps surprising me with his directing skills. It’s too bad the public has let themselves be convinced by the media that he’s the most evil person to ever come out of Hollywood which is absurd. I guess they feel the more they discredit him the more they discredit “The Passion of the Christ”.

Great work Mel !
