An under-appreciated gem of campy sci-fi-tinged horror, this directional debut from director Fred Dekker has everything from a busload of frat-guy zombies to an undead killer puppy to an amusing death by lawnmower rampage that foreshadows Peter Jackson’s over-the-top finale to Dead Alive. Virtually unnoticed during its brief theatrical run, this wildly entertaining horror-comedy achieved a cult status following its home-video release. This low-budget effort throws alien monsters, axe-wielding killers, flesh-eating zombies, nudity, and drunken fraternity pranks into a blender, spiced with witty one-liners and references to dozens of horror classics.

The result is a satisfying treat that will tickle the tastebuds of horror fans. The film’s nominal protagonists are a pair of randy fraternity pledges who open a can of worms when they steal a corpse from the campus medical facility and release a horde of space-leeches, which proceed to infest the bodies of everyone in sight. The host bodies subsequently become homicidal zombies with a penchant for popping in on unsuspecting sorority girls. The town’s only hope seems to be a hard-boiled ex-cop who has uncovered the secret link between the zombie invasion and a 30-year-old axe-murder case… and who’s also several sandwiches shy of a picnic. Dekker keeps things moving at a brisk pace thanks to some outrageous set-pieces ,some of which happen so quickly they’ll have viewers reaching for the pause button, and clever dialogue, particularly for Atkins (”Girls, the good news is your dates are here; the bad news is, they’re dead”), who dives into his crusty character with relish

Not only does director/screenwriter Dekker keep things moving along nicely by offering some exciting and bloody thrills, but he also makes some interesting choices with the portrayal of his main characters as well. In addition to offering a social misfit protagonist who remains uninterested in the usual college party scene, the inclusion of a handicapped sidekick who isn’t defined by his disability shows a director unafraid to offer real, identifiably human characters; a refreshing change of pace compared to the all-too-perfect teens that populated horror films throughout the following decade. Along with character names that offer sly nods to numerous famous horror directors, Dekker also includes a beyond hard-boiled police detective hilariously cocksure swagger provides much of the film’s effective gallows humor. Sure Dekker includes such college horror film mainstays as the obligatory love interest and the spoiled jock who gets his rocks off humiliating the nerds, but once he turns up the heat during the final act, cinematic clichés take a backseat to fast-paced zombie head-bursting fun.

Now that i’ve widely spoke my mind, i must turn the table in a violent fashion and speak this out loud, to the top of my lungs: 11 years for the DVD release of one of the funniest, most entertaining campy B-flicks of the 80`s? An extended director’s cut in Blu-ray only covers 50% of the misery we’ve suffered over the years, trying to get a decent version of this deliriously entertaining classic.

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS is one of the best horror films from the 80’s. It influenced so many horror films – SLITHER for example – and it is sad that it has been unavailable for so many years. I have been treasuring a VHS copy all these years and finally I can replace it for a Blu-ray edition.

Oddly enough, this Tri-Star Pictures film was not a success when it was released back in 1986… but has developed a huge cult following like other horror gems from the decade like NIGHT OF THE COMET and THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD that manage to mix horror with elements from sci-fi.

The story is quite simple. It starts hilariously bad as some pygmy aliens in a spaceship get rid of an “experiment” after a hilarious chase across the corridors of the ship. Fast forward some time and we’re on Sorority Row, 1959. A couple of teens is making out in the car. They see a shooting star falling nearby and go look for it. Interestingly enough, there’s a murder on the loose. So the guy goes looking for the shooting star while the girl stays in the car… and what follows is a BEAUTIFUL moment of tension as the murder is getting close to her with an axe…

The guy finds the shooting star location and slugs enter his mouth. Fast forward AGAIN to 1986 and we’re back to the Sorority Row (Pledge Week) where everything is about to begin again…

This film is so stylish as it masterfully blends killing slugs and ZOMBIES.

In fact, it has some of my favorite lines ever!!!

DETECTIVE “I have good news and bad news girls. The good news is your dates are here.”

GIRL “What’s the bad news?”

DETECTIVE “They’re dead!”

In a nutshell, this is one of those classic horror films from the 80’s that blends horror and comedy: it has lots of amazing effects, great makeup, a great cast and a near-brilliant script. Here you have slugs, zombies, jokes, heads exploding, lots of pace and a great performance by veteran actor Wally Taylor.

Also, as a trivia, screenwriter Fred Dekker named his characters Ray CAMERON, Detective LANDIS and Sgt. RAIMI.

A noted critic is famous for saying that the worst movie the Marx brothers could ever make would still be better than most films out there. That’s how director Steven Spielberg is these days – though not at the top of his critical or popular peak, he continues to make movies that – though not shoo-ins for a Top 100 list – are ‘good.’ Case in point: The Terminal is the worst movie he’s made in a decade, and I still had a pretty good time.

If anything, The Terminal (like Young Adam with Ewan McGregor) proves that an immensely talented star and American Everyman like Tom Hanks can rise above just about anything and make it worthwhile. His plight as the immigrant stuck in the airport terminal is alternately hilarious, touching, and so incredibly nuanced that you do – believe me on this – forget it’s a megastar playing the role. Hanks plays the role with a Chaplinesque grace that compliments everyone around him, especially airport workers Diego Luna, Kumar Pallana, and Zoe Saldana. And the movie works…to a point. What I found most shocking about Terminal is that it really comes apart with the introduction of the plot strand involing Catherine Zeta-Jones’ flight attendant. Her Amelia is a schlocky, As the World Turns-inspired piece of character writing that is too often contrived and sappy. And unconvincing at that – quite a feat considering Zeta-Jones is the most beautiful woman on the planet.

I don’t really know what was going through the minds of writers Sacha Gervasi and Jeff Nathanson when they decided to throw this movie away in its final act. This movie has so much wistful charm it’s easy to throw off the ‘Amelia situation’ and succeed, but the plot spotlight hits her too much near the end; and it gets so sappy. Ebert hails Spielberg as an American director who can make audiences cry without manipulation, but The Terminal becomes too noodging as one act of kindness after another guides the movie to its close. And I admired the film’s aim for simplicity in its final tie of the plot strands (yes, this movie turns on a peanut canister), but as the credits rolled, I felt a vague feeling of dissatisfaction (a la A.I.).

It’s difficult to really judge a movie like this. The charm, heart, and wit displayed in most of it is enough to keep it afloat despite some serious missteps, but let me take a minute and be unfair. This is a director who has helmed some of the most enduring works of American film…so why didn’t he notice some the soap opera-ish writing and cheesiness that pops up too often in this film? I look toward the movie’s faults more because I know they could have been fixed: Amelia could have been more believable, the movie could have left out some “awww” moments at the end, and it could have trimmed off about 10 minutes. Had The Terminal taken the time to match the perfection of the film’s first half, it would have been one of the best movies of the year. I had such a great time for a while, and wanted to follow it to even greater things. Even now, though, it’s a warm, engaging little comedy stuck in an overlong melodrama’s body. GRADE: B

“The Terminal” has a lot going for it.

It has the crowd-drawing director, actor, actress, and a plot that would make anyone say, “how in the world?”

And for the most part, it lives up to it. Hanks is absolutely amazing in his role. I forgot it was him for the majority of the film, and though that should be par for the acting course, it’s not for many actors. He loses himself as Victor, and he’s not afraid to lay it out for his character. He changed his walk, stance, everything for Victor. It’s the complete package, and Hanks never misses a beat.

Spielberg delivers what you expect: excellent directing. There are so many little touches in the background during the entire film that you sit and smile when you catch it, and when a scene comes off as completely coherent, you realize there was so much reinforcing what had occurred. The typical (of recent films anyway) Spielberg lighting comes into play frequently, and it makes for a lovely film. He got such a marvelous performance from Hanks and the rest of the cast…must be a really famous director, eh?

Catherine Zeta-Jones had a smaller role than I expected, but she still pulled a decent performance. I believed her, for the most part. A couple scenes, no, but for the most part.

The supporting cast of Victor’s airport friends is marvelous. The chemistry between them and Hanks is great, even with Hanks not speaking English very well. I really like those characters, and the actors pulled it off brilliantly.

The script is good, dialogue believable, and story followable and lovable.

My only complaint with the film is that it seemed a little drawn out at points. It’s about 2 hours, and I thought it could’ve been shorter. But the subplots keep you entertained, and you really grow to appreciate the characters. There are some fascinating character developments and studies in this one. You’ll want to think when it’s over, though you may not know what about.

“The Terminal” may not be what you expect; but it is a good film, with comedy throughout and some nice dramatic moments too. I recommend it. Enjoy Hanks’ brilliant work!

Well, it’s not a precise description, but it does explain the function of anime filler: episodes not based on the manga it springs from. And “Bleach Uncut Box Set: Season 4, Part 1 – The Bount” anime begins an entire arc not based on Tite Kubo’s manga, although it still manages to be pretty suspenseful, funny and action-packed.

The day after the gang’s return to the living world, Orihime is suddenly sucked into a vast replica of the Hell Gate, by a doppelganger of her brother. Her kidnappers are the mysterious Ririn, Kuroudo and Noba — and they quickly lure Ichigo, Uryu, Chad and Renji on a series of bizarre games. First it’s a chase around town, then a surreal maze in the local museum. Finally, they’re brought back to school, where they must uncover who the imposter among them is… or everyone will vanish.

It turns out that these three weirdos are all working for an old friend, to prepare Ichigo and Co. (plus Rukia and Renji) for a massive fight against the immortal soul-sucking Bounts. The Bounts have recently started consuming living human souls, and for some reason they are also allied with a rogue Soul Reaper named Maki Ichinose. What’s more, their cruel leader Jin Kariya wants to get his hands on Uryu, for a secret plan to do… something.

Filler episodes in anime are usually pretty bad — at the very least, they bend the characters into doing and saying odd things. For the most part, “Bleach Season 4 Part 1″ avoids that tendency — there’s still plenty of weird individual powers, sword fights and bloody action, as well as duels between floating fire creatures, snakes, living waterspouts, metal spiders and little flying eyeballs with teeth. The Bounts, they have some mean powers.

But the story is hampered by an over-reliance on flashbacks (is this “Bleach” or “Lost”?), and the story sometimes slows to a crawl. The dialogue is still plenty of fun (”You guys are checking each other out!”) and there’s plenty of comic relief (Ichigo trying to find a toy that satisfies Ririn). And the writers spin up some intriguing backstory for the treacherous Maki Ichinose and the Bounts — they’re not very scary or imposing compared to Hollows or Aizen, but they’ll do for a filler arc.

Ichigo and his amazing abs (you could grate cheese on them!) make a good return in this arc, but he seems to have lost some key brain cells — he’s a smart guy, yet he doesn’t know that blowing up a fire extinguisher and leaping down an elevator shaft might not be a good idea? Still, our orange-haired hero remains a likable protagonist who emanates hardcore determination to protect his buddies.

Uryu is explored in detail, struggling with his recent loss of powers, and the knowledge that he is now a burden and a danger to his superpowered friends. And the writers do a good job with the supporting characters — Chad, feisty Renji, strong-willed Rukia and quirky Orihime (”I remember there was tea!”). The Bounts aren’t really explored much yet, but the three mod-souls are fun characters: Ririn is a rather shrill little bird-girl, Kuroudo a flamboyant bunny purse (yes, Rukia DOES love him), and Noba is a little ninja turtle who is almost as quiet as Chad.

“Bleach Uncut Box Set: Season 4, Part 1″ provides a pretty solid introduction to “Bleach’s” first filler arc, and despite some flaws, it’s still pretty fun to watch. Just be prepared to fast-forward sometimes.

The fourth box set starts off with Ichigo and his friends Chad , Orihime, and Uryu returning from the Soul Society after rescuing Rukia and helping the other soul reapers after the betrayal by Aizen and his followers, thinking that they can take some leisure time the friends soon find themselves in another dilemma as seemingly a group of powerful unknown people are going after Ichigo and his friends. After a few episodes though you’ll find out the truth and the reason as Ichigo and the others find out that they have a new threat called the bounts, bounts are humans who can live forever as long as they feed on the souls of humans and now the bounts have gotten a new and incredibly powerful leader with a dark and devious plans for his bount followers. I’ve just started reading the manga series so I don’t know if this story saga is really part of the Bleach manga series or not but regardless the series are very addictive and entertaining to watch. This first box set gives you the episodes 64 through 79 so it looks like that they’re going to make this bount saga a two box set piece which for the price is very agreeable. Like always the video is clear and sharp and the voice cast for the Japanese and English crew were great as well though the extras aren’t much to really shout about, the set comes with four dvds put into four thinpack cases and put in a paper sleeve which I regret since I feel that the way they did the first three sets was much better. So if you’re a fan of the Bleach series here’s the fourth set ready to buy and if you’ve never seen the show or read the manga try checking it online I’m sure you’ll be a fan of the series after that…

I had ran accross this title awhile back when it was first released in Japan.

Looking over the design work I had wondered, “WOW, what a cute and interesting looking show.” Unfortunately at the time this film, was in the stage of, “Here’s another interesting OVA series that might not make it over here.” And it was a surprise that it was picked up and released here. I’m glad that they did.

I had the opportunity to view this title over the weekend with a friend. And all I can say is “wow”. Very original in it’s simplicity and complexity.

While some at first glance may look at it as being cute on the outside the series hides a dark side, a side that is “reality”. The whole point of it looking cute was a cover-up. And I must say the creators did a good job at pulling at it off. This is not your typical anime film that manages to “spoon feed”, it’s viewers. Oh no, this is a very highly psychological piece of work. I say this because, while the film projects one view of things, what you’re seeing is not what it appears to be. Many of the elements in this 4-part series are very “symbolic”. It’s key factor “ADOLESCENCE. The driving force behind what the film is trying to display in another light. Many will not get the references on the first watch taking it as it is.

For example, in one point of the film there is a scene where all the students gather in what appears to be a gym. All the kids there are practically naked except for their gym shorts. They get their measurements taken. Like taking a physical. Yuri Otani, stands on the scale to get weighed and height checked. She notices that she grew an inch or two. One of the girls from a neighboring class (if not the same class) hears this and makes a comment to some of her friends,

“I hear they say that the girls from class … who wear ‘Borgs’ on their head, grow an inch taller.”

Yuri overhears this. While some of the girls giggle about the comment her friend jumps to her defense even though they were only making fun and didn’t mean anything cruel. Looking at this scene directly, it would look like you’re typical scene of about something out in open, when in reality it’s showing symbolism.

The ‘Borgs’symbolically represent an extension or push into adolescence. Basically, the characters Kumi, Kasumi and Yuri are put into these roles that are meant for adults. In other words growing up sooner than they would like. The constant licking of the back area that they get from the ‘Borgs’ looks like in one view “feeding”, when in actuality they are the stimulus to growth. If anyone knows anything about the ‘brain’s anatomy,that the hypothalamus and pituitary glands are responsible for the secretion of GROWTH hormones. And thus given the understanding behind, “girls who wear ‘Borgs’ on their head grow faster than everyone else”.

You really have to pay close attention to what’s said and the visuals in this series to draw a conclusion about some of the elements. Nothing is to be taken literally. This film was meant to make you think.

Although the rating on the case states that the film is for ages 13+ and up, I would not expect anyone under that age to understand this series. Especially, due to some of the more mature if not disturbing issues, that I will not mention. Older viewers may find this a challenge. But eventually understand and enjoy it. Giving insight to younger individuals.

But all in all it’s an excellent purchase and worth seeing. I’ve even recommended this video to our institution’s library [School of Visual Arts--NY, USA] video collection. We’ve just getting courses for anime as part of the animation curriculum. Such film recommendations as this one are a must for students here. We are in the process of getting the manga’s as well. Although different from the OVAs, will present a another view of the same story.

Just to clear up some confusion, ‘Alien 9′ was not created by the same team that did ‘Excel Saga’. It was created at the same studio that did ‘Excel Saga’, but not by the same creator. The same goes for the ‘Cowboy Bebop’ creator. Just the director for the movie ‘Cowboy Bebop: KOHD’, worked on this project. The creator of ‘Alien 9′ is Hitoshi Tomizawa’. He is the true creator. The others were responsible for animated work. Companies here that release anime of such titles, need to be more clear about these things. Vague information can send people the wrong information about a project.

this 4-part OVA series is not just another anime series — it is an intersting psychological plot, a wonderful set of character designs and graphics, manifested into a refreshingly unique style. The animation is smooth and elegantly executed, and by the end of the fourth episode, I guarantee you’ll be ravished for more. I shall not ramble the plot at you, rather, I believe you’d benefit more from experiencing this phenomenal dvd yourself. I severely recommend this to those of you interested in drama, shoujo anime, or anyone who appreciated plenty of action in the context of a meaningful plot.

National Lampoon brought the raunchy and raucous college world to the mainstream kids back in the 1970’s with Animal House, which would go on to virtually springboard the careers of several of its stars, including John Belushi and Tim Matheson.

But for those of us who may have been born after the original release of AH and raised on films like the American Pie trilogy get a new version of Animal House for the new generation with Van Wilder.

Van (Ryan Reynolds) is the virtual definition of a slacker in the college world, having spent seven years attending Coolidge College. He is pretty much the life of the party and he revels in it greatly. It’s only until his dad (Matheson) finds out that Van is still in school and places a halt to Van’s tuition payment that he realizes that it’s time to get his head in the game and find a way to graduate and pay tuition.

A story printed by the school’s star reporter Gwen (Tara Reid) causes Van to become a party planner and raise the money for his tuition, along with the help of his closest friend (Teck Holmes of “Real World” fame) and his personal assistant (Kal Penn). When a relationship develops between Van and Gwen, Gwen’s pretentious boyfriend Richard tries to put a wedge between them. When Van learns of this, he gets a little revenge in one of the most ingenious and disgusting ways ever devised (trust me, this has the humping a pie thing beaten hands down, no pun intended…)

Van Wilder is pretty hilarious in spots and somewhat disgusting in others, particularly the classic payback Van pulls on Richard and later on when Gwen also gets a little revenge on Richard when she learns a little something that Richard did behind Gwen’s back. Also, Penn and Holmes have some gut-busting moments in support and is it nice to see Matheson deciding to continue his association with National Lampoon by bridging the gap between Animal House and Van Wilder.

A word of advice, though: if you have a weak stomach, this is not the movie for you. But if have that type of sense of humor that thinks that letting one rip loudly in public causes you to double over with laughter, then definitely check out Van Wilder.

Comedies are my favorite films, and I love this movie, one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve seen several teen-flick comedies, but this one takes the cake, even over “Road Trip” which I thought was a hoot. Perfect timing on all the quips and humor, and this comedy is just plain college fun. Yeah, there’s a small message in there about growing up and realizing your potential, but it’s woven in pretty well without the sappiness. Small scenes in this movie make me laugh just thinking about them. One of those scenes is when Van is in remorse over his loss of Gwen. A freshman girl walks in asking how he’s doing, and he bursts into “I’m all out of love…I’m so lost without you…” and strums a very poor chord on his guitar. It was great and totally unexpected. I love that scene!

The writers out did themselves on the script. This is a smart comedy that cleverly weaves the characters and story together. I’ve seen other comedies that were complete paradies of other movies with no plot but scene after scene of horrible gags and imitations of other movies. Apparently there is a market out there in copy-cat world that is alive and kicking. Since the movie is set in the tradition of National Lampoon, Ryan Reynolds combines some character traits of Chevy Chase, Jim Carrey and Bill Murray to complete his Van Wilder persona, but he still maintains that lovable charm. He is treated as a celebrity in his school, but eveyone loves him because he sincerely cares for them and knows how to have a “pimpin’ good time” doing it. This is not a typical “teen underdog becomes popular and gets revenge on his school bullies” story. If you dig deep the real conflict of the story is with Van Wilder himself and his reluctance to graduate and move on into the real world. But that’s neither here nor there — it’s more fun to think about him as the Party Liaison or the Raddest …Dude Alive.

Kal Penn holds his own as Van Wilder’s assistant Taj. He just adds that much more to the comedy and practically stole the show. Tara Reid porbably did her best role as Gwen in this movie. That’s about it.

Great movie with lots of laughs. Gotta see it.

In reality, it stands tall for the niche story that it tells,

comprising a wide spectrum of fascinating aspects, turning the

movie into a kind of magic, along the 90 minutes.

The wide-screen cinematography is visually appealing, the

soundtrack appropriate (albeit low tech, not great).

Above all, the acting talent is phenomenal, as Franco Nero

carries the picture on his shoulders from start to finish as no

other actor could with sheer intensity, focus and hard work.

Corinne Clery is equally, if not more valuable as an actress,

with a rare combination of youthful yet classy, ravishing beauty

and sensuality that is rarely seen on screen anymore, these days.

David Hess, one of the bandits, has his moments too, convincingly

playing a bad guy escaped from a mental institution, authoring a

stick up with several others.

The number of surprises along the way never ceases, the tension

constantly building, the suspense heavy. There is a non-stop

theme of mental instability, whether it’s played by the bickering

couple or the bandits, etc.

The mental state of the bad-guys is ascertained by exterior

expressions of obscene and/or tasteless humor / jokes made worse

with a non-stop patent alcoholism.

Unusual circumstances are added to the sequences, such as the

various pistols and rifles, and a number of more dead-serious

moments, namely, the point blank shootings resulting in blood

packs going off, cars driven over a cliffs, explodions, hostage

situations, nudity combined with brutality.

An effort is made for the work to be as realistic as possible,

with rival bandits trying to get the upper hand and seizing the 2

million in cash, for example.

An effort in realism is shown, demonstrated by the

vulnerability of the woman character, played by Corinne Clery,

and also the vulnerability of both Clery and Nero’s characters in

face of anarchy, and unstable psychological makeups.

For example, juvenile delinquents with a criminal streak in them,

empty oil cans on a road to have the couple skid off, crash and

get robbed.

There are a number of controversial elements, nudity, the

yelling, drinking, demented conduct, as Murphy’s Law is proven

time and again, as things turn for the worse as time passes, and

as cruelty becomes a token.

No, that transcript is not excerpted from secret Oval Office tapes; it’s an exchange between the cheerfully sexist, jingoistic, folkway-challenged and generally clueless French secret agent Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath (alias OSS 117) and his Egyptian liaison, the lovely Larmina El Akmar Betouche. The scene is from OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a gallingly amusing Gallic spy romp from director Michel Hazanavicius.

The director and his screenwriter Jean-Francois Halin adapted the script based on characters from the original “OSS 117″ novels by Jean Bruce, which concerned the misadventures of an Ian Fleming-esque French government agent. The books inspired a series of films, produced in France between 1956 and 1970.

After a brief b&w prologue depicting agent OSS 117 (Jean Dujardin) handily dispatching a Nazi adversary from a plane (sans parachute) in a wartime escapade, the film flash-forwards to the year 1955. Hubert (as we will refer to him going forward) is sent to Cairo to investigate the mysterious death of a fellow agent. He is assisted by the aforementioned Larmina (Bernice Bejo) and just like an undercover 007, he is given a business front. In this case, our intrepid agent poses as a chicken exporter; and yes, all of the inherent comic possibilities involving this most ubiquitous species of barnyard fowl are gleefully explored (and the credits assure us that none were harmed during filming).

As the intrigue thickens, Hubert encounters some sexy royalty in the person of La princesse Al Taouk (Aure Atika) as well as the usual Whitman’s assortment of shady informers, sneaky assassins and dirty double dealers that populate exotic spy capers. In the interim, thanks to his deGaullist stance and blissful cultural ignorance of the Muslim world, Hubert manages to deeply offend nearly every local he comes in contact with. As one Egyptian associate muses to himself: “He is very stupid…or very smart.”

Hazanavicius has concocted a tremendously well-crafted and entertaining spy spoof here that actually gets funnier upon repeat viewings. Unlike the Austin Powers films, which utilizes the spy spoof motif primarily as an excuse for Mike Meyers to string together an assortment of glorified SNL sketches and (over) indulge in certain scatological obsessions, this film stays manages to stay true and even respectful to the genre and era that it aspires to parody. The acting tics, production design, costuming, music, use of rear-screen projection, even the choreography of the action scenes are so pitch-perfect that if you were to screen the film side by side with one of the early Bond entries (e.g. From Russia With Love) you would swear the films were produced the very same year.

I also have to credit the director’s secret weapon, which is leading man DuJardin. He has a marvelous way of underplaying his comedic chops that borders on genius. He portrays his well-tailored agent with the same blend of arrogance and elegance that defined Sean Connery’s 007, but tempers it with an undercurrent of obliviously graceless social bumbling that matches Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau. One of the film’s running gags has Hubert uttering “deep thought” epiphanies that belabor the obvious. While getting a massage, he announces: “I love being rubbed with oil.” While at breakfast, he realizes: “I love buttering my toast.” Stopping to gaze at a public fountain, he wistfully offers: “I love the white noise water makes.” DuJardin delivers these lines with the knowing wisdom of a high lama, imparting a Zen proverb. I tell you, the man is a bloody genius. Not to be missed.

Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, a.k.a. OSS 117 (Jean Dujardin), is the most incompetent and culturally insensitive spy who has ever lived. However, none of his superiors in the French secret service seem to have noticed. After the mysterious disappearance of his former partner, Jack, OSS 117 is sent to Cairo to complete the assignment that Jack was working on. He must go underground as a poultry farmer and stop an arms smuggling operation involving Egyptian extremists and Nazis.

This is the eighth film to feature OSS 117, a James Bond-esque spy (the first OSS 117 movie actually pre-dated the movie of “Dr No”). Apparently the previous films in the series were relatively “serious” espionage films, made between 1956 and 1970, but this more recent update of the series is played purely for laughs and it succeeds immensely. “Cairo, Nest of Spies” is a very silly film that had me laughing harder than I have in a long time. What makes this film so great is the fact that the humour plays on so many different levels. Not only is there a lot of very funny visual humour (simply the expression on Dujardin’s face was enough to make me laugh in a number of scenes), but the script is also very well written and contains a lot of great lines. Although made in 2006, the film is set in the 1950’s and much of the humour comes from OSS 117’s complete lack of cultural awareness and of his patronizing attitude towards all Egyptians.

Don’t be put off by the subtitles, this is a great film that will appeal to any fan of spy comedies such as “Austin Powers” and “Get Smart”, even if you don’t speak French.

The editorial review is completely in error. This is not the broadcast TV Series of Sakura Wars. This DVD contains the first 3 episodes of OVA 2 (anime made directly for the video market).

These episodes focus on the characters of the TV series in greater detail, exploring their lives, personalities and histories in a series of one-offs. For example, the first episode focuses on Maria and Sakura, the second on Iris and Reni. The third episode is a rich treat that features the whole cast in a dramatic “horror” story.

Unfortunately, American audiences are not getting the full scope of this magnificent series, because the 25 TV episodes are not available on DVD yet. I was fortunate enough to have seen it in a different country, and all the necessary character introduction, development, action, etc. was established in the TV series.

Understand that this OVA series allows an audience to “revisit” their favorite characters in slower-paced and different settings, as stand alone episodes. Treat them as short stories, not chapters of the same long story. Artistically inspired by old Japanese movies, each episode encompasses a slightly different mood and “flavor”.

If you have caught the TV series, then nothing more need be said. You’d probably buy this DVD just to see more of the characters. Though the caveat is that there is less action, and more slower-paced exposition in the OVA. If your only exposure to Sakura Wars is through the OVA, then hold on for a bit, and do not make a judgement about the whole series until you have seen the TV episodes.

This is the 2nd SAKURA WARS video series. Taking place after the SAKURA WARS 2 video game, Lt. Ogami is leaving to head up a new division in Paris, France(where the SAKURA WARS 3 game takes place). Before he leaves, he recounts all the memories he’s had since he became part of the Imperial Flower Division. Each episode of this 6-episode series is a flashback of his. Episode 1 actually takes place in between the SAKURA WARS 1 & 2 video games. Episodes 2-6 happen afterwards with new characters Orhime and the group’s only other male character. The OVA is blessed with brilliant CGI animation and a truly memorable soundtrack, especially the Broadway-like songs! The only down side is that there is no real enemy for the Imperial Flower Division to fight in this as there next demon attack doesn’t happen until the SAKURA WARS motion picture. They do take down some mafia hoods, a ghost, an a old acuqaintence of Maria’s who tries to blow up the theatre. However, nothing that warrants the use of their steampowered mechas, so the opening credits are the only time during the entire series you actually get to see them, or the team in their new military outfits. The DVD is good with great bonuses like the Japanese trailers, but the dub is very stale with the fake European accents, so stay with the Japanese language track! If you liked the original OVA series, then by all means continue with this great followup.

I generally don’t cry at movies. I love any movie that can move me enough to shed a tear or two. Grave Of the Fireflies is not one of those movies. In those movies even though I’m sad the final scenes leave me with a residual hope that while some tragic event has just occured the charecters involved will grow and live better. Grave of the Fireflies doesn’t do this. There is no hope or possiabilty of things getting better. This is Life at it’s cruelest. Life that will never get better. This movie doesn’t move you, it shatters you.

Seita And Setsuko (the boy and His little sister) aren’t Heros and their abusive aunt isn’t the villian. Neither for that matter is either side of the war protrayed as good or bad in these movie. This is just a story of people being people. some kind, some indiffrent and some compleatly harsh. Seita makes mistakes that many children in his position would.

Although fifteen years old this film is still very beatiful. The images it portrays are quiet and subdued yet elegent. The final scene is something that shall forever be burned into my brain. It’s touching and heartwrenching finality should break most people.

Well I love Grave of the Fireflies. I Love it for it’s unflinching look at war and life, It’s graceful bueaty as it portrays a young girl playing amidst Fireflies, and for what it does to me at the end.

Why must fireflies die so young?

“Grave of the Fireflies” (”Hotaru no haka”) is one of the most powerful anti-war films I have ever seen, which means that it has no competition when it comes to emotional impact in terms of animated films. The death of Bambi’s mother was a traumatic shock, but nothing like the sense of despair and grief that overwhelms you by the end of this film. The film begins with the spirit of a young boy showing us his death in a train station, after which we follow the fireflies into the past to see his story. At the beginning of the original movie of “Brian’s Song” we were told: “All true stories end in death. This is a true story.” So is “Grave of the Fireflies” because I have no problem granting the legitimacy of “truth” to fiction.

In the last months of World War II an American fire bomb raid destroys the port city of Kobe, where almost all of the buildings are made of wood. Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi/J. Robert Spencer) is a 14-year old boy who survives along with his 4-year old sister Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi/Rhoda Chrosite). They were separated from their mother during the raid, which spares them from her fate. Their father is a navy officer serving in the Imperial Navy at sea, and the two kids go off to live with an aunt. With both his school and the war factory where we worked gone, Seita does not know what to do. So he tries to take care of his sister. But his aunt constantly berates him and after trading his mother’s kimonos for rice that she stingly shares with the children, Seita decides to take Setsuko and live in a couple of caves dug for bomb shelters. For a while their live remains idyllic, but then there is nothing left to trade for food, and no food to be bought for money. Seita has to steal food to survive while Setsuko is getting weaker and weaker from hunger.

This film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel written by Akiyuki Nosaka, which won the Naoli Prize, the Japanese equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. Like Seita, he survived the fire bombing with a younger sister, who died in his care. Obviously the story stems from a sense of guilty and I believe telling this story was confessional rather than cathartic for Nosaka. Writer-director Isao Takahata turns this tragedy into what can only be described as a poetic experience, achieving a cinematic lyricism that could never have been accomplished in a live-action film (e.g., the way the fireflies have a counterpoint in the pieces of ash that drift on the wind after the fire bombings). There is a quietness to this film, a sense of contemplation that emphasizes important and small moments alike, and makes scenes linger as the heart-rending story plays out to its fatal conclusion. The voice work by both of the young girls playing Setsuko is extremely effective; I have a slight preference for that done by Ayano Shiriashi simply because it is much more naturalistic than what you usually find in anime depicting children.

“Graves of the Fireflies” is an unforgettable film, one which will reduce most viewers to tears if not outright sobbing. Watching it is a painful experience, but then a film depicting the horrors of war and showing what happens to young children is supposed to have that effect. Viewing it a second time makes the experience even more intense (you probably will not catch what Setsuko’s last words are the first time through, but be prepared for what it will do to you when you watch the film again). You will never, ever forget this film and you should be very, very careful about showing it to younger children, because it will change forever what they think about animated films. It will do that for you as well.
